Experience Opportunities
Rub shoulders with the big guns while gaining some practical experience. This will provide you with valuable training, contacts and even money.
Gain first hand experience from the head honchos in the organization of your choice. The CA practical experience requirements consist of a prescribed 3-year period of training with a CA Training Office. Up to one-third of a candidate's experience can be obtained internationally as long as the candidate remains under the overall supervision of the employing office. There are some restrictions on chargeable hours earned outside of Canada.
Expanded Opportunities Beyond Public Practice
Choosing where you will get your practical experience may be harder than you think, because the Institute has expanded the list of places where you can get on-the-job training. In addition to public accounting firms, now students can gain experience at approved training offices like RBC, Manulife, Telus and the Office of the Comptroller General of Canada. You can browse through a full list of Ontario CA Firm Offices who are designated to train CA students. There are over 600.
Exemption From Employment Requirement For Students
Students may register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) when:
- Beginning employment with an approved CA Training Office or
- Accepting an offer of employment in an approved CA Training Office that will start no later than 12 months from the date of applying for registration
Effective February 26, 2010 ICAO Council approved a special provision regarding exemption from the employment requirement for students. However, new applicants will only have until December 31, 2011 to register under this exemption, at which point the exemption will be discontinued. Please note, that the discontinuance of this special provision does not affect the registration status of any students already registered under it. These students will remain registered with the Institute subject to their continuing to fulfill all registration requirements as outlined by the Institute’s Bylaws and Regulations.
